Our Holistic Approach

Head

We engage students on an intellectual and academic level in order to challenge them to bring their best to their gap year experience. We believe that knowing God's Word beyond a surface level provides an opportunity for students to be formed into the likeness of Christ.

Heart

Legacy helps students take what they are learning and be formed into people with an integrated faith. The journey from head knowledge to heart change happens best in community, and personal mentorship & discipleship is where we see the most impact for our students on a heart level.

Hands

Legacy helps students connect what they believe to how they are called to live. Through mentoring, praxis, and intentional discipleship, students are equipped not only to grow in faith, but to serve others, strengthen the Church, and step into

their next season with clarity and confidence.

Bible-Centered Classes with Depth, Curiosity,  & Academic Diligence

Throughout the entire Legacy gap year, students will engage in:

  • Three Biblical Survey courses that offer a comprehensive understanding of God’s redemptive plan through Jesus.
  • Personal devotions
  • Morning worship
  • Scripture memorization
  • Open Forum discussions provide space to wrestle with theological and cultural questions that naturally arise as students attempt to connect biblical truth to daily life.
  • Topical courses and modules such as Bible study methods, spiritual disciplines, gospel fluency, church life, apologetics, biblical sexuality, and peacemaking.
DETAILED COURSE OVERVIEW

Schedule & Structure

Students' time is spent partially in classes, and partially in hands-on ministry opportunities, mentorship, learning excursions, and more. While we value academic excellence, we recognize that we are a non-accredited, faith-based gap year program, and we desire for our students to walk away from Legacy with practical and relational skills for a life on mission for Christ. Because of this, a typical schedule for Legacy students can involve mentor meetings, church activities, serving at Youth Nights with UBY, visiting partner ministries, volunteering, joining families and staff for community meals, and more. Check out what a typical week in the life of a Legacy student looks like.

  • What is Legacy?

Legacy Bible Institute is a two-semester discipleship program designed to immerse students in the entire Bible while exploring Christian doctrine, church history, and hands-on ministry. Mornings focus on in-depth study, afternoons emphasize practical ministry application, and evenings and weekends provide time for worship, community service, and personal growth.

  • Who is Legacy for?

Legacy is for anyone serious about growing in Christ—whether you’re:

    • Taking a gap year before college or career.
    • Preparing for ministry and leadership.
    • Seeking to deepen your faith while serving in your local church and community.
  • Where is Legacy?

Legacy classes are held in Smithville, Ohio. Full-time students live on campus or in provided offsite housing under the guidance of resident advisors.

  • Why Attend Legacy?

    • Build a strong foundation in God’s Word by reading through the entire Bible.
    • Develop a Christian worldview and gain confidence in sharing your faith.
    • Prepare for college and life within an intentional Christian community.
    • Discover and grow in your gifts through hands-on work and service opportunities.

    • Form lifelong Christian friendships in a close-knit environment.
  • What is the Class Size?

Class sizes vary but remain intentionally small (typically 2 to 10 students) to foster strong relationships, meaningful discussions, and personal discipleship.

  • How much does Legacy cost?

Tuition is $4,800 for the first semester and $5,700 for the second semester, but generous scholarships can significantly reduce or fully cover costs. Students are encouraged to raise at least $1,250 per semester through sponsorships. Additional financial aid options include:

    • Work-study internships to offset costs.
    • Interest-free loans for students who qualify.

At Legacy, we believe finances should never be a barrier to spiritual growth and biblical training. With available scholarships and financial aid, most students graduate debt-free.
